Help Protect Your Pets From Heartworm with our Mokena Veterinarian

Heartworm disease is one of the most treacherous diseases in the animal kingdom. Most people think that the disease only affects dogs, but heartworm disease can also be found in cats as well. Dogs are however more prone to be stricken with the disease. Mokena Animal Clinic is sounding the alarm about heartworm disease.

What Are Heartworms?

Heartworms can grow up to one foot in length and they can live all over the inside of the body of dogs. The worms mate and produce more worms which can cause the death of the infected animal if the condition is not treated. Even when a pet has been treated for heart disease, often times there is irrevocable damage due to the heart, arteries, and lungs of the host animal long after the successful treatment of the disease.

In regards to heartworm disease and cats, felines are not necessarily the best hosts for heartworms, as they rarely survive long enough to become adults. But this does not mean cat parents are completely off of the hook, as cats are still susceptible to heartworm disease as underdeveloped worms can still cause long-term damage. In addition, heartworm disease is not easily detected in cats.

Prevention is a Better Option than Treatment

Pet parents who have not had their pets tested for heartworm disease need to get them to a veterinary clinic as soon as possible to have them evaluated. Once tested and if heartworms are found, your veterinarian can start your pet on heartworm treatment to prevent further damage caused by the disease. If your pet is free and clear of heartworms, your vet will prescribe a preventive heartworm treatment for your dog or cat. Here at Mokena Animal Clinic, we carry several brands of heartworm prevention medications. Some brands even come as combination medications which include heartworm prevention as well as flea and tick prevention.
