Adoption Boom: The Complete August Puppy & Kitten Vaccine Checklist for New Mokena Pet Parents

Bringing home a puppy or kitten in August is exciting, but the first few weeks also come with important health decisions. Young pets are especially vulnerable to contagious diseases because protection received from their mother gradually fades. A timely vaccination plan helps build immunity while your new pet grows, explores, and settles into life with your family.

For new Mokena pet parents, the safest approach is to schedule a veterinary exam soon after adoption. Vaccine records from a shelter, rescue, breeder, or previous owner should be reviewed before additional doses are given. When records are incomplete or unavailable, your veterinarian can create an appropriate catch-up plan.

Start With a New-Pet Wellness Exam

A vaccine appointment should begin with a physical examination. The veterinarian will assess your pet’s general health and development before administering vaccines. This visit is also a good time to discuss nutrition, behavior, parasite prevention, microchipping, and plans for spaying or neutering.

Mokena Animal Clinic offers puppy and kitten care along with core and lifestyle-based vaccinations. The practice also provides parasite testing and preventive care, which are important because intestinal worms, fleas, ticks, and heartworms can affect young pets.

August Puppy and Kitten Vaccine Checklist

Vaccination timing depends on age, health, previous doses, lifestyle, and the specific product used. Your Mokena veterinarian may adjust the schedule, but this checklist covers the main topics to discuss:

  • Puppies: Begin the DAP or similar combination series at approximately 6 to 8 weeks. It protects against distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus, with repeat doses generally given every 2 to 4 weeks through at least 16 weeks of age.
  • Puppies: Discuss leptospirosis vaccination. Current AAHA guidance recommends it as a core vaccine for dogs, and the initial series typically requires two doses.
  • Puppies: Schedule rabies vaccination at the legally appropriate age and keep the certificate with your pet’s records.
  • Puppies: Ask whether Bordetella, canine influenza, or Lyme vaccination fits your dog’s exposure to boarding, grooming, daycare, wooded areas, ticks, or frequent contact with other dogs.
  • Kittens: Begin the FVRCP series at approximately 6 to 8 weeks. This combination protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia, with boosters continued through the recommended kitten period.
  • Kittens: Discuss feline leukemia virus vaccination. FeLV is considered a core vaccine for cats younger than one year because kitten exposure risks can be difficult to predict.
  • Kittens: Schedule rabies vaccination based on age, product instructions, and local legal requirements.
  • Both: Bring every available vaccine document so the veterinary team can confirm dates, products, and remaining doses.

Why One Vaccine Visit Is Usually Not Enough

Maternal antibodies can interfere with a young pet’s response to early vaccines. Because the timing of that interference varies, puppies and kittens receive a series rather than a single dose. Missing a booster or ending the series too early may leave a gap in protection.

Keep appointments on the schedule recommended by your veterinarian. Until the initial series is complete, ask where your pet can safely socialize. Controlled experiences are valuable for development, but dog parks, unknown animals, communal water bowls, and other high-traffic pet areas may create avoidable exposure.

Choose Vaccines Around Your Pet’s Lifestyle

Not every Mokena puppy or kitten has the same risks. An indoor kitten living alone may need a different long-term plan than a cat that goes outdoors. A puppy that will attend daycare, visit a groomer, hike through grassy areas, or travel may need additional protection.

Vaccination decisions should be revisited as your pet’s routine changes. Annual wellness exams allow the veterinarian to review exposure risks, update required vaccines, and determine whether boosters are due every year or at longer intervals.
