Your Pet's First Appointment: What To Expect

Your pet's first appointment with us is important to you. Not only will it give you and your pet a chance to meet our veterinarians and staff of animal lovers, but it will also allow our veterinarians to examine your pet, discuss any problems you are having, and develop a comprehensive plan for your pet’s overall health. Here’s what to expect at your first visit to Mokena Animal Clinic.

The Physical Exam with Your Veterinarian

In order to maintain an accurate medical history for your pet, it’s important that your veterinarian conduct a full medical exam during your first visit, and each year after that. A comprehensive medical exam will include:

  • Weight Check - Checking your pet’s weight each visit will help your veterinarian determine if your pet is is getting the proper nutrition and the right amount of exercise.
  • Temperature Check- Your pet’s body temperature will let the vet know whether your pet is fighting off an infection or illness.
  • Eyes and Ears - Your veterinarian will check your pet’s eyes for discharge, irregularities, cataracts, and abnormal responses to light. The ears will be checked for infection, parasites, and any other abnormalities.
  • Skin and Coat - The skin and coat are important indicators for overall healthy. Your vet will look for signs of fleas or ticks, hot spots, dandruff, or signs of dermatitis.
  • Nose and Mouth - Dental health is another important indicator of your pet’s overall health. Your vet will check our pet’s mouth and teeth for periodontal disease or tooth problems, swelling, or infection. The nose will be checked for any abnormal discharge.
  • Heart and Lungs - Your veterinarian will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs for signs of a heart murmur or abnormal sound that could indicate infection.
  • Tests and Vaccines - Routine blood work and vaccinations may be administered depending on the age and overall health of your pets. Common tests include Lyme and heartworm tests. Medications may be prescribed based on the results.

Developing a Comprehensive Wellness Plan for Your Pet

Your pet’s annual visit is a great time to discuss any health or behavioral concerns you might have. Whether you need advice about housebreaking, introducing your pet to a new family member, or dealing with a problem behavior, your veterinarian is available to provide expert knowledge and advice.

We will also work with you to develop a comprehensive wellness plan that may include diet and exercise modifications, a complete vaccination schedule, and preventive medicine to protect your pet from parasites and disease. We will work with you to pinpoint allergies or other medical issues your pet might be having and develop a treatment plan.
